Level 2 Award in Additional Core Cymraeg

Learners acquire and develop their language skills at different speeds, and this is particularly the case for those studying Cymraeg in English-medium settings. This new additional qualification is aimed at learners studying GCSE Core Cymraeg who are ready to advance their Cymraeg skills further.

The new Level 2 Award in Additional Core Cymraeg will offer learners in English-medium education an opportunity to gain experience and confidence in using Cymraeg day-to-day and to progress further and more quickly along the continuum for Cymraeg learning.

This additional qualification will inspire learners and give them the confidence and ambition to use and enjoy Cymraeg in their life, learning and work.

What does the qualification look like?

The qualification will be made of two units of equal size:

  • One unit will focus on extended verbal communication: understanding, responding and spontaneous conversation.

  • One unit will focus on extended writing. Responding to the topic ‘Cymraeg in My Area’, learners will research, plan and apply their language skills to present information in an original way.

What will learners be assessed on?

The extended verbal communication unit will assess a learner’s ability to:

  • Communicate spontaneously and interact with familiar and unfamiliar speakers.

  • Communicate knowledge, understanding, ideas, opinions and feelings.

  • Respond to the views of others.

  • Use idiomatic language, appropriate register, appropriate intonation and understanding of grammar to enrich expression in a range of contexts.

The extended writing unit will assess a learner’s ability to:

  • Research and understand various texts.

  • Use of a range of strategies to summarise, collate, compare and analyse information.

  • Communicate and convey meaning in writing.

How will learners be assessed?

  • Extended verbal communication will be assessed through speaking and listening. This unit will be assessed by the awarding body using digital methods and will require learners to communicate and interact verbally in a spontaneous manner.

  • Extended writing will be assessed through reading and writing. This unit will be assessed by teachers and moderated by the awarding body.

  • The qualification will offer unit certification for learners who successfully complete each unit. Units will be graded Pass, Merit or Distinction.

  • Learners who successfully complete both units can be awarded the Level 2 Award in Additional Core Cymraeg.
