The Curriculum for Wales has been central to the creation of these proposals. It states that different languages should be explored in relation to one another, so too the skills of understanding and response (listening and reading), and communication and expression (speaking and writing). Learning about and through literature should contribute to all aspects of learning about languages.
We have co-created these proposals with a range of stakeholders, including teachers, assessment experts, and colleagues from WJEC, regional education consortia, further education colleges and universities. We also sought feedback from Welsh Government and Estyn to ensure that the proposals support the implementation of the Curriculum for Wales.
As well as the qualifications listed above, we will be creating a brand-new GCSE British Sign Language. However, we need a bit longer to work with stakeholders on its design. You can read more about our work in this area in the section below.
We will also be creating a set of small qualifications in a range of international languages to support engagement and progression in language learning. These qualifications will form part of our next consultation early next year which will focus on the wider range of qualifications that will be available alongside the new GCSEs.
