GCSE Mathematics and Numeracy

This qualification builds on learners’ prior knowledge, skills and experiences to give them the mathematics and numeracy skills they need for everyday life and for further study.

GCSE Mathematics and Numeracy offers an engaging and exciting experience for learners helping them to develop as confident mathematicians with a positive attitude and disposition towards the subject.

It will encourage learners to be creative, flexible and resilient in tackling mathematical problems and enable them to appreciate how these can help them in real-world contexts.

What will learners cover?

Learners will develop and apply their knowledge, understanding and skills in the following areas:

  • Number

  • Algebra

  • Geometry and Measures

  • Statistics and Probability.

What will learners be assessed on?

The qualification will assess learners ability to:

  • Recall and use their knowledge of the prescribed mathematical content.

  • Select and apply mathematical methods.

  • Demonstrate strategic competence by making connections between different aspects of mathematics and using mathematical skills in unfamiliar contexts.

How will learners be assessed?

  • This qualification will be assessed entirely through exams.

  • Exams will be tiered. We want your views on whether there should be two or three tiers of entry.

  • There will be opportunity for unitised assessment, meaning learners can be assessed on individual units while the course is still being taught.
