GCSE Health and Social Care, and Childcare

Studying health, social care and childcare can open up many rewarding learning and career paths. From working in early years education or nursing, to support roles within the local community or caring for older people.

GCSE Health and Social Care, and Childcare allows learners to understand how best to provide care and support for others at different times in their lives. Providing effective care for someone can make a key difference to an individual and offer an amazing sense of reward and fulfillment.

Learners will explore and evaluate how the health, social care and childcare sectors work, looking at the different ways they promote the wellbeing of communities and the values that underpin the work of professionals within them.

What will learners be assessed on?

  • Human growth, development, health and wellbeing across the life cycle.

  • Indicators to measure and support health, wellbeing, care and development.

  • Health and social care, and childcare provision in Wales.

  • Public health activity, promotion and interventions that support growth, development, health and wellbeing.

  • Investigating health and social care, and childcare provision and issues, and analysing and interpreting relevant data and information.

  • Evaluating approaches to providing care and presenting reasoned judgements about that care.

  • Communicating principles of care to meet the needs of specific groups and audiences.

How will learners be assessed?

  1. On-screen exam (40%) taken in the final year of study, allowing learners to demonstrate and apply their knowledge of health and social care, and childcare.

  1. Non-exam assessment (60%) that allows learners to demonstrate their application of skills, knowledge and understanding. Learners will evaluate how health and social care, childcare and health promotion activity in Wales meet the needs of specified target groups. This assessment will be set by the awarding body, marked by teachers and moderated by the awarding body.

GCSE Health and Social Care, and Childcare (Double Award)

We have also developed proposals for subject content and assessments which could be used to create a double award GCSE Health and Social Care, and Childcare. We are seeking views on how well a double award qualification would meet the needs of learners in Wales and what it would mean for schools.
