GCSE Drama

Studying drama allows learners to explore both physical and verbal communication in a range of social, cultural and historical contexts. It also builds knowledge of how drama and theatre is developed and performed.

GCSE Drama provides a wealth of opportunities to develop creativity, communication skills and curiosity through experiential learning. Alongside this, they get to demonstrate essential knowledge and understanding of a broad range of drama created and performed by others.  

This qualification will inspire learners to notice, express and share their ideas and experiences with confidence.

What will learners be assessed on?

  • Demonstrating knowledge and understanding of how a broad range of drama and theatre is developed and performed by others.

  • Applying theatrical skills in performance and/or design, to communicate artistic intentions with control and sophistication.

  • Explore, create and develop ideas in response to a stimulus to realise artistic intentions in performance or design.

  • Reflect on and evaluate their own work and the work of others.

How will learners be assessed?

  • An exam worth 30% of the qualification, targeting underpinning essential knowledge and understanding.

  • This exam will include digital, on-screen assessment.

  • A practical performance unit worth 30% of the qualification, set by the awarding body and marked by the awarding body, with the option for learners to be assessed on their performance or design skills.

  • A devising unit worth 40% of the qualification set by the awarding body, marked by teachers and moderated by the awarding body, with the option for learners to be assessed on their performance or design skills.
