Approved list for GCSE Physical Education and Health
A new made-for-Wales GCSE in Physical Education and Health is being taught in schools across Wales from September 2026. This qualification will provide learners with an opportunity to develop a range of knowledge, skills and understanding in relation to health and wellbeing, and sports and physical activities, in a variety of meaningful and relevant contexts.
60% of the qualification will be assessed through non-examination assessment (NEA), where learners will have to:
perform in two sports or physical activities selected from an approved list
provide coaching or personal training to others in a sport or physical activity selected from an approved list
The approved list has been carefully developed with input from a range of stakeholders, including practitioners, subject advisors, representatives from Sport Wales, and the awarding body, WJEC.
We understand that the sports and activities that learners participate in can change over time, so stakeholders canrequestthat a sport or physical activity is added to the approved list using thisonline form.
Before completing the form, stakeholders should make sure the sport or activity is not already included on the approved list.
All stakeholders must read the guidance for applicants prior to completing the form. This guidance document explains the information required in the form (including the criteria), and outlines how and when submissions will be reviewed. All sports or physical activities must be recognised by Sport Wales and must meet the criteria for assessing the suitability of sports or physical activities to be included on the approved list.
Applications are reviewed annually. All applications submitted before the end of December 2026 will be considered by a stakeholder panel in Spring 2027. If the application is successful, the sport or physical activity will be added to the approved list for learners commencing their programme of study (typically entering Year 10) in September 2027.
This process will continue on an annual basis. Schools, learners and/or parents will need to submit an application when a learner is in the autumn term of Year 9 (or sooner). This will enable the sport or physical activity to be considered for inclusion on the approved list before learners commence their programme of study.
