GCSE Health and Physical Education

Studying health and physical education allows learners to explore ways in which physical activity can help them and others improve physical, mental and social wellbeing.

GCSE Health and Physical Education is a broad and inclusive new qualification, which encourages learners to develop their conceptual understanding of health and wellbeing.

Through a choice of practical learning pathways, they will gain hands-on knowledge and skills to improve their own, and others’ engagement and participation in an active and healthy lifestyle.

What will learners be assessed on?

  • The benefits of physical activity on human health and wellbeing.
  • Social, cultural and dietary influences on sports performance and physical activity.
  • Physiological and psychological dimensions.
  • Analysing physical activity and performance to plan and implement improvement strategies.
  • Developing skills and techniques in sports performance and activity.
  • Monitoring and evaluating progress towards meeting sport and activity targets.

There will be three practical pathways available to learners, encouraging participation by learners with different interests and goals:

  • Promoting and delivering physical activity and sports participation events.
  • Coaching and personal training activities.
  • Performance in individual and team sports.

How will learners be assessed?

  1. Exam (40%) that allows learners to demonstrate and apply their knowledge of health and physical education.
  2. Non-exam assessment (60%) that allows learners to demonstrate their application of skills, knowledge and understanding. Learners will work within one of the three practical pathways above when undertaking this assessment. The assessment will be set by the awarding body, marked by teachers and moderated by the awarding body.
