Approved list of Sports and Physical Activities survey

In June 2023, we published the approval criteria for a new Made-for-Wales GCSE in Physical Education and Health, which will be available for first teaching from September 2026.

60% of this qualification will be assessed through non-examination assessment (NEA) where learners will have to:

  • perform in two sports or physical activities selected from an Approved List

  • provide coaching or personal training to others in a sport or physical activity selected from an Approved List

We’re now working with stakeholders to co-create the Approved List of sports and physical activities that learners will choose from. This will include an engaging and inclusive range of appropriate individual and team sports and physical activities.

We have used the current WJEC GCSE Physical Education activity list as a starting point for developing the draft Approved List for our new Made-for-Wales GCSE in Physical Education and Health. We’d like to know whether you think any sports or physical activities should be added to, or removed from, this draft Approved List.*

We’ll use criteria to assess the suitability of sports and physical activities that will be included on the final Approved List. We would like your feedback on the draft criteria, which can be read here. This will help us finalise the criteria to ensure that any sports and physical activities included on the final Approved List provide appropriate opportunities for assessing learners’ skills in the new GCSE.

Share your feedback on the draft criteria and whether any sports or physical activities should be added to, or removed from, the draft Approved List using our online survey.

Before responding to the survey, you will be prompted to register or sign in. This is a simple process that gives us the information we need to help analyse your responses. For an overview of why we collect personal information, how it is stored and may be used, please read our Privacy Policy. If you have already used this platform to have your say, then you won’t need to register again. Simply log in using your current credentials.

This survey will close on 6th December 2023. If you have any questions or would like to receive the survey in an alternative format, please email reform@qualifications.wales

*Any decisions on which sports and physical activities will feature on the new Approved list will be made in the context of the new Made-for-Wales GCSE in Physical Education and Health, so WJEC will not be required to amend the activity list for the current GCSE Physical Education as a result of this exercise.

CLOSED: This survey has concluded.
